• Avoid talking about things that are difficult to express in English.

• When you speak in English, simplify what you want to say

SPEAKING

7 In groups, discuss what people can do to save the rainforests.

Suggested answers

We haven’t done enough to save the rainforests yet. We must do much more. Logging is a big problem today in much of the world. Some animals have already become instinct. So, we must educate people about the importance of the rainforests. Then, we can save the animals and plants that still live there and aren’t extinct yet.

1 What places do you think visitors to Jordan would like to see?

Suggested answer

Ajloun Forest Nature Reserve, Petra, Jerash, Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, Madaba, Amman

2 Read Julia’s email to Sally about her visit to Jordan. Which places does she mention?

Hi Sally,

Hello from Jordan! I’m here on holiday with my family and I’ve already been here for a week. Although I haven’t seen all of the sights yet, I’ve already been to some interesting places. We went to Ajloun Forest Nature Reserve yesterday. The nature reserve has protected all of the animals there since 1978 CE. I saw a lot of animals that I have never seen before, like hyenas and wolves. My favourite animal was the porcupine.

The reserve is also special because of the trees. There are many trees that we don’t have in Britain, like pistachio, strawberry and carob trees. We also saw the black iris flower. This flower is special because it is the national flower of Jordan! There are also orchids and tulips. A guide showed us around the reserve. In the spring and summer, visitors can stay in cabins at the reserve. I’d like to stay there next time we visit; it sounds very exciting!

Tomorrow we’re going to visit the Roman Theatre in Jerash. We’re also going to visit Amman soon. I’m very excited!

The weather here has been lovely. It is warm and sunny. I haven’t taken many photographs yet, but I still have two more weeks here.

I hope you liked the postcard I sent!

See you soon

Julia

READING

7 Read the text, and then find the correct sentences (a–d) for each gap (1–4) in the text.

Birds in Jordan

(1)………………………… . Millions of birds pass through Jordanian skies each year, some of which stop to spend the winter and others to feed, drink or rest before moving on with their journeys. Some of the most important natural landscapes to spot migrating birds are the Gulf of Aqaba, the Dead Sea, Wadi Araba and the Jordan Valley.

Some examples of those birds are small Warblers, huge White Storks and colourful Rollers and Bee-eaters. (2)………………………….. .

Some people would never imagine how Jordan, with its many deserts, could be a habitat for so many different species of birds. (3)………………….. . For example, there exist 13 species of lark that have brown feathers. Their feathers help them to hide easily among the desert’s rocks and sand.

Unfortunately, the Houbara Bustard, which was an important member of the Jordanian desert in the past, is now extinct because of hunting. This is one example of the many other birds and animals that are in danger. (4)………………………… .

a That is why we should try and stop this criminal act before it is too late!

b However, over the years, some birds learnt to adapt to the desert climate and are now considered to be desert species.

c Since Jordan is located on one of the main flyways of the world, it is becoming more popular with bird watchers.

d However, birds of prey such as eagles, hawks and falcons can be seen over the mountains of Petra and Wadi Rum where they take advantage of the desert’s heat to store energy.

GRAMMAR

9 Find four mistakes in the use of the Present Perfect with yet and already. Underline and correct them.

My family and I go on holiday every summer, but the holiday we went on to Jordan was the best. It has yet been three years since I have been back from my incredible trip. Even though my parents have yet been to the Lost City of Petra, they enjoyed it again as much as I did. The unique temples and tunnels that are carved in the pink rocks are amazing. Although I have already taken so many pictures, I still haven’t had enough of it already. I am planning to visit again soon. So if you haven’t thought about going to Petra already, you should really start considering it!
